Padel (pronounced pad-el)

Before the decision was made to set up The Padel Federation (United Kingdom), we made enquiries with the Federacion Internacional de Padel (F.I.P.), the main international governing body for the sport, and the Federacion Espanola de Padel (F.E.P.) the Spanish Federation, regarding the name that they would prefer us to use in the United Kingdom.  This was because we were aware of other spellings, such as paddle, and other descriptions for the sport, such as Paddle Tennis.

Both the F.I.P. and F.E.P Presidents’ advice was that just the word Padel should be used to fully describe the sport.

This is a good situation for the sport in the United Kingdom, because it will mean that when the word Padel reaches our dictionaries, it should only relate to the sport of Padel. In the full Oxford English Dictionary, there are already many meanings for the word ‘paddle’ and adding another one is only likely to cause more confusion.
